Aquí las cosas siempre se han hecho así...

Unos investigadores prepararon un experimento: colocaron unos monos en una jaula, en la que colocaron una escalera sobre la que colgaban un montón de plátanos. Cuando algún mono intentaba alcanzar los plátanos subiendo la escalera, un mecanismo en los peldaños hacía que se lanzaran sobre los monos chorros de agua fría.
No pasó mucho tiempo hasta que los monos se percatarán del chaparrón que les podía caer si alguno subía a por plátanos. Al cabo de unos días, la escalera era tabú, como a algún mono se le ocurriera acercarse, los otros lo tiraban al suelo y lo pateaban.
Ya habían pasado unas semanas sin que ningún mono subiera la escalera, pese al tentador montón de plátanos. Entonces, los científicos jubilaron a uno de los monos y metieron a otro de becario. Este miró los plátanos, miró la escalera, miró a los compañeros, pensó que no se enteraban y corrió hacia la escalera. No llegó a alcanzarla, ni la siguiente vez ni la siguiente. A la tercera paliza se resignó.

Cuando jubilaron a otro mono, el reemplazo tuvo también sueños en los que participaba una escalera y unos plátanos, pero también fue apaleado cuando se acercaba. El que más entusiasmo mostró en la paliza era el último mono que había entrado. También se resignó.
Con el tiempo, todos los monos habían sido sustituidos, pero seguía la costumbre de pegar al que se acercara a los plátanos, aunque ninguno de ellos sabía la razón real: ninguno había recibido los chorros de agua fría. De hecho, se habían eliminado desde que se cambió el primer mono. Al pasar los meses sin que ninguno se acercara, ni siquiera se sabía que castigo caería sobre el mono que intentara acercarse a los plátanos, pero seguían sin hacerlo por miedo, consciente o no.

Si fuese posible preguntarles por qué nadie subía la escalera, la respuesta sería: "No sé, aquí las cosas siempre se han hecho así..." ¿Suena familiar?
